Apple has expanded end-to-end encryption to cover all iCloud data categories including photos, notes, and backups, making it impossible for anyone — including Apple — to access user data stored in the cloud.
Advanced Data Protection
The expanded encryption, called Advanced Data Protection 2.0, means that even if Apple's servers are breached, user data remains encrypted and inaccessible. Only the user's device holds decryption keys.
Law Enforcement Concerns
The FBI and DOJ have criticized the move, arguing it hampers criminal investigations. Apple maintains that user privacy is a fundamental right that supersedes law enforcement convenience.
- All iCloud data now end-to-end encrypted
- Even Apple cannot access user data
