Apple's iOS 20 introduces several new privacy features that give users more control over their data. Here's what each feature actually does in plain English.
Communication Safety Expansion
AI-powered detection of sensitive content now extends to third-party messaging apps (WhatsApp, Telegram) in addition to iMessage. Parents can opt-in for children's accounts.
Advanced Data Protection Enhancements
End-to-end encryption now covers iCloud Photos, Notes, and Reminders by default (previously opt-in). Only you can decrypt your data — Apple cannot access it even with a court order.
App Privacy Reports 2.0
- Real-time notifications when apps access camera, microphone, or location
- Weekly summary of data shared with third parties
- One-tap revocation of all permissions for any app
- Comparison tool showing which apps are most privacy-invasive
Private Relay Improvements
Safari's Private Relay (included with iCloud+) now works with all browsers on the device, not just Safari. This prevents ISPs and websites from tracking your IP address and browsing history.
Enable these features in Settings → Privacy & Security.
