The European Data Protection Board has upheld a record $1.3 billion fine against Meta Platforms for continuing to transfer European Union user data to servers in the United States in violation of the General Data Protection Regulation.
Regulators found that Meta failed to implement adequate safeguards to protect EU citizens' data from potential surveillance by US intelligence agencies, despite repeated warnings and a previous enforcement action in 2023.
Meta has announced it will appeal the decision while accelerating the construction of dedicated data centers within the EU to ensure future compliance with local data residency requirements.
