Passkeys — cryptographic credentials that replace passwords entirely — have reached mainstream adoption in 2026. Here's why they're better and how to switch.
What Are Passkeys?
Passkeys use public-key cryptography tied to your device biometrics (fingerprint, face). You authenticate with your face or fingerprint — no password to remember, type, or have stolen.
Why They're Better
- Can't be phished (the cryptographic key is bound to the legitimate website)
- Can't be stolen in data breaches (only public keys stored on servers)
- Can't be guessed or brute-forced
- Faster than typing passwords
- Sync across devices via iCloud Keychain, Google Password Manager, or 1Password
Current Support (April 2026)
Google, Apple, Microsoft, Amazon, PayPal, eBay, GitHub, Best Buy, Kayak, and 500+ other sites now support passkeys. The FIDO Alliance reports 15 billion accounts have passkey capability.
How to Switch
Go to the security settings of each account and look for "Passkey" or "Sign-in options." Set up a passkey — it takes 30 seconds per account. Keep your password as a backup until you're comfortable.
