A new survey from Forrester Research finds that 72 percent of Fortune 500 companies have implemented zero trust security architectures across at least part of their organizations, up from 41 percent in 2023. The rapid adoption reflects a fundamental shift in enterprise security strategy away from traditional perimeter-based defenses.
The most commonly deployed zero trust components include identity-based access controls at 89 percent adoption, microsegmentation at 64 percent, and continuous authentication at 58 percent. Companies report an average 43 percent reduction in successful lateral movement attacks after implementing zero trust principles.
Despite the progress, full implementation remains challenging. Only 28 percent of surveyed companies have deployed zero trust across their entire infrastructure, with legacy systems and operational technology environments cited as the primary obstacles. Forrester estimates that the average Fortune 500 company will need an additional two to three years to achieve comprehensive zero trust coverage.
